Guava is a sweet, seasonal fruit grown typically in tropical and subtropical climates, such as Panama. It’s origins are thought to be somewhere in Central America, what is present day Mexico on down to Panama. It’s scientific name is Psidium guajava, labeling the small brush and tree for which the fruit is grown. Guava can often be referred to by it’s other defined names, including; the common guava, lemon guava, or yellow guava.
Guava has become very popular among north american and asian countries, due in large part to the associated health benefits. A guava fruit can contain rich sources of vitamins a, c, and b6, as well as calcium, iron, and potassium. It’s also a great source of fiber. Some studies have listed guava among the fruits which can reduce the risk of, and even prevent, common cancers, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.
